adventures CBS Sunday Morning

New York, New York!

January 13, 2010
“These little town blues, are melting away
I’ll make a brand new start of it – in old New York
If i can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere
It’s up to you – New York, New York…”
— Frank Sinatra

Ok, so I don’t have the small town blues, but I’m in NY! Ah! For the semester! I can’t believe it one bit. Bridget, we’re not in Indiana anymore. 😉 (Btw: Bridget is my dog.)

(My semester home… this is of Broadway from my train station… in Manhattan! My street is one over.)

I cannot believe how lucky I am to be here interning at the GREATEST TV SHOW EVER. Seriously. CBS Sunday Morning is beyond words.

In the past 2 days, I met the effing EDITOR of THE NEW YORKER (eep!@!#$#!!!) annnnnnd Ken Sunshine who is the publicist for the Jackson family, Justin Timberlake, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bon Jovi, John Mayer… the list goes on. Not to mention Harry Smith and Tracy Smith who were the reporters on the interviews… I grew up watching CBS and CBS Sunday Morning and obsessing over broadcast journalism so it is beyond surreal for me to meet these people I watched when I was little. Plus, I see my favorite reporter EVER, Bill Geist , walking around all the time…

While I was in David Remnick’s office, one of the girls there summed up Sunday Morning the best:

The New Yorker + NPR = CBS Sunday Morning… yes.

On my first weekend here I went to the 26th street flea market where the Sartorialist has taken some photos. It was definitely more expensive than flea markets in the Midwest, but there was some really strange stuff there…

… like this coat. The boys that were with me said that this was fake, but I disagree. I swear this coat was real fur… crazy, huh!

Sweet real zebra chair… poor zebra, though.

Meet my friend Matt… he blends in with the African masks, eh?

Me: “Matt, what do you think these are?”
Matt: (thinking) “Coat check tags?”
Me: “Hahahahaha! No. Animal ear tags.”
Matt: “Wtf.”

… but seriously, who is crazy enough to sell animal ear tags that were formerly in a FARM ANIMAL’S EAR?!?! New Yorkers are very odd. I can just imagine someone using this as a decoration in their house:

Host: “Ah, welcome to my humble abode.”
Guest: “Oh why thank you. What is this nice little bowl of colorful numbers you have here?”
Host: “I’m so glad you noticed! Those are my sheep earrings.”

WTF. I need to go back to my sheep-farming-4H days and collect some ear tags and sell them at the flea market!

Owl cuff links: yes.

Naked, horned, plastic babydolls? Alright!

I actually do really like creepy babydolls. I still have my first doll ever sitting on my bed. Her name is Baby, (one-year-olds are not the most creative doll-namers). Baby has natural dread locks, her limbs are taped on with athletic tape, and she is missing her eyelashes on one eye. And I love her!

Anyway, I am in NYC for the semester! Any New York bloggers want to meet up? I would love to. 🙂 I have a DIY post coming up in the next 2 days, I promise.

I think I’ll go back to looking at the NY skyline and watch some cars and trains. And watching Madmen.

I think I just fell in love with that zebra chair. No. Joke.

Stacie Grissom, this is The Best Blog Ever. Please keep up your posts so that I may live vicariously through your fabulous NYC experience ( I mean don't get me wrong, DePauw is great but uh…)

I miss you terribly and if I visit you for spring break keep close tabs on your owl bag and psychadelic skirt because they may or may not vanish mysteriously
