If I could incorporate flowers into everything I make, I would. There’s just something about flowers that just gets to me– I’ve made a fabric flower corsage, a fabric flower headband, a flower scarf, a flower pillow… the list goes on. 🙂 When I like something, I use it over and over. When I was in elementary school, I tried to incorporate my black lab, Daisy, into every art project I made. If the teacher would tell us to paint a photo of our kitchen window, I’d paint Daisy in the yard. If the teacher told us to make a clay jar, I tried to make mine look like my dog. If she told us to make a life-size holiday elf out of construction paper, I put my dog on the elf’s sweater. (Not kidding.) Today, I’m stuck on the flowers. 😉

I have quite a collection of fabric flower brooches, but this one is my favorite because it’s the biggest and it just looks fun. (It’s definitely inspired by the ladies over at Ban.do. ;))

What you need:

-Synthetic fabric like chiffon
-Candle
-Pin
-Needle and thread
-Clear spray paint (optional)

How to make a fabric flower brooch:

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is cut out flower shapes in some chiffon or synthetic fabric. Natural fibers like cotton or wool won’t work because you need to be able to burn the edges and let them shrivel up. I’d say about 10-20 flower shapes in varying sizes will do the job for one brooch.

Step 2: After you have all your flowers cut out, you need to burn the edges to prevent the flower from fraying. It’s really easy, just run the fabric along the candle flame and the fabric will just shrink and twist a bit. If your fabric is a bit floppy, you can stiffen it by adding some clear spray paint. I just sprayed mine in the garage on top of some plastic. (Don’t use newspaper, the print will transfer to the fabric.) After you’ve stiffened your fabric, just sew the layers together and a pin on the back. That’s it! 🙂

I think pops of color always look awesome with some black and white stripes. 🙂
