DIY Vinyl Record Bowls

DIY Vinyl Record Bowl

I got the idea to make these little bowls a few years ago when I bought Mark Montano’s book, the Big-Arse Book of Crafts
. (Mark Montano is the most brilliant crafter around– I love his books and his projects.) One bowl I made sits on my dresser and holds little hair knickknacks, and I gave a few bowls away, but I never got around to writing a tutorial about it.

DIY Vinyl Record Bowl

To make a vinyl record bowl you need:

-Real bowl (One that can go in the oven.)
-A vinyl record (I chose some polka records because I liked their colors. Also, I love the word “Polka.”) ๐Ÿ™‚
-An oven

This project is so easy and fun. The first thing you need to do is turn on your oven to about 350 degrees. Then you take your record and your bowl and rest them inside the oven once it has heated up a bit. Wait until the record starts to warp a bit and then take it out of the oven.

After you take it out of the oven, just press the record down into any bowl or shape that you want. You can make a square record bowl, an oblong record bowl, whatever you want. I got my best results when I used a glass mixing bowl– the height of the bowl made the sides of the record curl up really nice when I stuck it in there.

Hold your record in place inside the bowl until it hardens again.

And that’s it!

You can keep whatever you want in these bowls, I think I am going to take mine to work and put them on my desk. I have a bit of a Post-It/knickknack organization problem… These might help. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My best friend and I did this, oh gosh, probably about 25 years or so ago with her brother's albums that we didn't like. Little did we know he had a slightly different taste in music than we did so needless to say…he was not happy with us at all! I'm not sure anymore what we used to melt them but I know it wasn't the oven. I do remember hanging out his bedroom window just in case there was an odor from melting them. LOL. It was probably a candle or a lighter that we used. Boy did we have a blast in recycling 20 or so of his favorite albums!

I remember doing this with my Mom and my sis when we were younger. It may have been a school project or just one of those “activities” to keep us busy. ๐Ÿ™‚

I've seen these before but never found directions for them… so I had to come up with my own process. I heat the oven to warm and the record still melts, but without the odor (and hopefully, the toxins)~ they can be spray painted and even detail painted with craft paints after priming or base coating ~ have fun!

I have some old scrap-craft magazines from my MIL, that are from the late 60s, early 70s and this project is in at least two of them!!! There are even instructions how to make the bracelets from them as well. I think the how-to is also in the set of Craft Encyclopedias I found from '75…

Just be careful not to overcook… or you will be scraping vinyl residue for quite some time…

The records also crinkle up without the bowl, makes for cute wall art (flower-ish type decor)

Just a warning, do this in a well ventilated area. I did this and ended up in the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning in my bloom stream from the release of the chemicals in the melting plastic. This happened over a month ago and Im still dealing with the effects. I loved the craft, but just make sure you dont end up like me.

  • bb April 18, 2014 at 6:59 am

You can also do this with boiling water! And no fumes! You boil the water, pour into deep safe pot thats big enough for the whole record to fit in, and holding the record straight up and let the edges melt into how you want. For the rippled effect you have to pressthe record down into the bottom of the pan.
