DIY Wine Crate Kitchen Shelf

Project 365
One night a few weeks ago, I was riding my scooter home off the subway and I noticed this wine crate outside of a liquor store near our apartment. In typical scrappy fashion, I picked up the crate and took it home, with no idea what I was going to do with it. When I walked in the door, Sean and I looked at it for a minute and then Sean had the idea to put it over our microwave as a shelf. Things had been piling on top of each other for a while, so this wine crate was the perfect way to add some kitchen space. :)

The first thing we did was clean the crate with 409. We did get it off the street after all. :) (I need to do a post of all the scavenged street/things in our apartment. It's pretty crazy. :)

Since we didn't have any stain, we darkened the wine crate with a bit of coffee and balsamic vinegar. The vinegar definitely worked better.

Before and after:

We just used 6 nails to secure the crate to the wall. It's very sturdy and we've put some pretty heavy pumpkins on the shelf in the past few weeks. :)

I live in the UK and collect unusual teas, Pumpkin Spice Rooibos sounds amazing! Wish I could get some of that here! And I love the shelf, it really works wonders for that space.

I have a whole double, six-foot-tall bookshelf built out of wine crates I found on the street! I love using found things!

sweeet!
looks great! i found one too, gotta shade it a bit. maybe a mix of vinegar and paprika would make a nice color...
and um... i don't know how it work there but my bananas get super-fast-over-rip.
a tip? - if you separate 'em they'll rip slower. the thing is bananas release this chemical which causes near by bananas (and avocados too) to rip faster.
